Let me just say that I am a lover of sunrises. I truly believe in the magic of watching a new day unfold and all the joy that it brings. That is exactly what I got to do last weekend. What made this sunrise so special was that I shared it with my sister and a few thousand people from around the world. This morning we were all gathered on a brisk Albuquerque morning to watch a delightful display of hot air balloons. The morning session of the 49th annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta began with a Dawn Patrol show and then the Morning Glow before Mass Ascension. To describe the experience as breathtaking would be an understatement. A 4am wake up is a big ask for a college student, but I am so happy that my sister indulged me. Bundled up in the early hours, it was pure magic to watch the balloons begin to glow. With the crowd cheering throughout, there was an electric energy in the air and as we watched the New Mexico sky fill with balloons I was filled with wonder, joy, and peace.
The festival wrapped today, on October 10th which also happens to be World Mental Health Day. As I reflected throughout the day, I realized a connection. Mental health is so broad and deeply personal to each of us. Part of my personal mental health is in these little moments. Each experience builds a memory. This sunrise experience is something that I will surely carry with me for years to come. On days when I may have missed the sunrise or just need a little magic in my day, I can close my eyes and see a beautiful sky and remember what it was like to share that with someone I love.
